If you have loose or sagging skin around your abdomen, you may be a good candidate for a tummy tuck. This procedure is one of the most sought-after plastic surgeries. Sometimes people lose weight and have excess skin around their midsections. Other conditions like pregnancy can also damage and weaken the abdominal walls.

The tummy tuck procedure can fix issues of sagging skin by removing it and creating a more toned and contoured abdominal area.

What Are the Different Types of Tummy Tucks?

Tummy tucks come in three different classifications: classic, mini, and extended.

  • Full Abdominoplasty- If you have excess skin around the upper and lower regions of the abdomen, this is the procedure for you. The surgeon will make two incisions to tighten and tone your midsection. Women who have sagging skin post-pregnancy or due to a major weight loss will benefit greatly from the classic tummy tuck.
  • Mini Abdominoplasty- The surgeon will make a bikini line incision to smooth out the sagging skin. The procedure will also get rid of that pesky “pooch” that some women have as a result of aging. The changes are often dramatic.
  • Extended Abdominoplasty- This procedure is ideal for people needing to get rid of significant amounts of skin. If you have lost a massive amount of weight with significant skin accumulation around the belly, the extended tummy tuck is best.

Is There Scarring After Surgery?

There will be scarring after surgery, but Dr. Howland will make it as minimal as possible. Incisions are an unfortunate part of any plastic surgery. However, small sutures will be used to promote better healing of scars. During the recovery process, certain products can also be recommended to minimize scars.

What is the Aftercare Protocol?

A tummy tuck can be pretty invasive, so there are certain things you will need to do to avoid pain, complications, or setbacks. Expect a moderate amount of swelling, puffiness, and pain. You will definitely need to take work off the first two weeks and not move around very much. You will likely have to wear a compression garment. Be sure to take prescribed pain meds as outlined.

Doing too much too soon can risk opening the wound– Dr. Howland will outline the do’s and don’ts regarding aftercare. This should be followed to the letter. The surgeon will also schedule additional appointments to monitor your progress.
